John’s Story
John journey with the Growth Company began at 17, and more than 15 years later, he’s still progressing with the same employer.
After realising that a trade wasn’t the right fit, John joined a two‑week pre‑employment programme delivered by the Growth Company. By the end of the programme, he had secured a role with W Howard Group, a family‑run manufacturing and e‑commerce business, where his career really began.
“Within two weeks I was in work. I started on £130 a week, and that was me in.”
Once in employment, John completed his Level 2 and Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeships, gaining hands‑on experience while developing practical office, communication and organisational skills.
“I knew I wasn’t a tradesman - I’m a people person. Being in an office environment suited me straight away.”
Progressing from Apprenticeship to Degree
After completing his apprenticeships, John progressed seamlessly onto higher education without leaving his job. Through the Growth Company, he completed a Business Management degree, studying one day a week while continuing to earn a salary.
“I wanted a degree, but I didn’t want to stop earning. Being able to work and study at the same time made it possible.”
John credits the small class sizes, one‑to‑one tutor support and workshop‑style learning for helping him succeed:
“It wasn’t just lectures – it was practical, supportive and you could access your tutors whenever you needed help.”
Turning Learning into Career Progression
Completing his degree opened new opportunities almost immediately. John was promoted to manage W Howard Group’s online business, a role he has now held for several years.
Today, John oversees e‑commerce operations, manages teams across multiple sites, works with UK and European markets and supports strategic growth across the business.
“As soon as I finished my Business Management degree, I progressed to the online side of the company.”
He says the skills gained through his apprenticeship and degree, particularly leadership, communication, time management and people management are used daily in his role.
“Managing people of different ages and backgrounds is a big part of my job – the degree really helped with that.”
Why John Recommends Apprenticeships
John strongly believes apprenticeships offer a practical and valuable alternative to the traditional university route.
“You’re earning straight away, gaining experience and progressing in a real job – without coming out with huge debt.”
He also highlights that the size of the employer doesn’t limit opportunity:
“I started in a family‑run business and there’s still been loads of progression. Don’t be put off by company size.”
Advice for Future Apprentices
“Don’t think it’s easy, it’s hard work. You’re working and studying at the same time.
But the payoff is massive: experience, qualifications and a salary all at once.”
