The Works Construction Academy, part of the Growth Company has joined forces with Hideaway Youth Project, to launch a new partnership in supporting the development of “We Can Work It Out!” a brand-new initiative helping young people across Manchester gain the skills, confidence and connections to start a career in construction.

The project came about after Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, approached us with an idea to better engage young people. The goal was to give young people real insight into the world of work so they can make informed career decisions based on knowledge as well as gaining relevant industry qualifications. Together, we made it happen.

Delivered through The Works Construction Academy, the programme brought together expertise from DWP, Catch22, Working Wardrobe, BAM and B&K, creating a one-stop pathway into the industry.

Learners not only developed key skills and earned their CSCS card but also took part in workshops, interview prep sessions and a Meet the Employer event connecting learners directly with businesses who are actively recruiting.

To remove barriers to employment, learners also received tailored support with ID and right-to-work documents, professional interview clothing and even a tour of a live site at the SkillsCentre.

Fifteen learners joined the first cohort, which launched on 3rd October and following the success of this pilot, Cllr Igbon is already exploring opportunities to replicate the model in other industries, with employers such as BIFFA expressing interest.

The collaboration has also led to an upcoming meeting with the Deputy Work and Skills and Executive Member for Work and Skills at Manchester City Council, a clear sign of the positive impact this partnership is already making.

“This project shows the power of collaboration,” said Cllr Lee-Ann Igbon. “By connecting young people directly with employers and practical training, we’re helping them take real steps towards long-term careers.”

At GC, we’re proud to continue working closely with our partners to support Greater Manchester residents into meaningful, long-term employment.
