In October 2025, Gavin West completed the Associate Project Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship with the Growth Company, achieving a Distinction.
Choosing an Apprenticeship - Later in a Career
When Gavin was first offered the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship, he admits he had doubts.
Like many people already in work, he questioned whether apprenticeships were really “for someone like him”. But what changed his mindset was the structure, learning on the job, applying theory directly to real projects, and building skills that could transfer across industries.
As a practical, self-driven learner, the apprenticeship suited Gavin’s learning style far better than a traditional course. It allowed him to reflect, apply learning immediately, and take ownership of his development.
Real Impact, Real Progression
While completing his apprenticeship, Gavin was promoted into a leadership role, moving from managing projects to leading a team of project managers.
The confidence, broader understanding of project management, and exposure to industry-standard approaches helped him challenge established ways of working, problem-solve at a higher level, and lead with clarity.
Today, Gavin works on innovation, optimisation and store format projects at Co-op Group, managing programmes that range from quick wins to longer-term strategic delivery.
Apprenticeships That Fit Around Work
Gavin is open about the realities of balancing work and learning. His apprenticeship required 6.5 hours of off-the-job learning per week, which he adapted into short, focused learning sprints that worked alongside a demanding role.
Crucially, the apprenticeship had no negative impact on the business - instead, Co-op gained a more confident, capable leader with a stronger toolkit.
Giving Back and Supporting Others
Now, Gavin actively supports apprentices within his team and across the wider organisation. He works with Co-op’s Talent and Development Hub and speaks at apprenticeship kick-off sessions, sharing honest insight into what it’s really like to be an apprentice.
He’s become an advocate - showing others that apprenticeships are about long-term growth, not just ticking a qualification box.
