The Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship is designed for individuals with foundational programming knowledge or entry-level experience in software development. This programme equips apprentices with the skills to build and test high-quality code across front-end, logic, and database layers. Apprentices will gain the expertise to develop and maintain applications that support specific tasks on computers and devices, working collaboratively as part of a larger team.

On successful completion, apprentices will achieve a Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship details

This apprenticeship covers a comprehensive range of software development skills, including coding, user interface development, database integration, and software testing.

What it covers:

Knowledge

  • Understanding agile and waterfall methodologies.
  • Applying software design patterns for secure, maintainable solutions.
  • Navigating the software development lifecycle effectively.
  • Using algorithms, logic, and data structures in problem-solving.

Skills

  • Writing high-quality, logical code in at least one programming language.
  • Developing user interfaces for specific channels.
  • Linking code to databases and testing for errors.
  • Applying structured techniques to debug and resolve software issues.

  • Communicating effectively with stakeholders.

In addition to the Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship, learners can access additional resources on platforms like Pluralsight to further enhance their skills.

Delivery

This fully remote course offers two flexible delivery options:

  • 24 months + 3 months EPA: A blended approach with fortnightly group training, one-to-one sessions every 4 weeks, webinars, online courses, video content, and additional support as needed.
  • 18-22 months: Starts with a 12-week intensive group bootcamp, followed by one-to-one sessions, webinars, online courses, video content, and ongoing support.

Entry requirements 

GCSE grade A*-C/9-4 in maths and English or equivalent is desirable

Apprentices must be employed in an IT/software role.

Progression

Upon successful completion, apprentices will be prepared for roles such as Web Developer, Application Developer, Mobile App Developer, Games Developer, or Software Developer, contributing to innovative projects and advancing their careers in the tech industry.
