The Engineering Fitter Level 3 Apprenticeship equips apprentices with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours essential for a career in engineering fitting. 

Fitters may specialise in areas such as mechanical, electrical, or control systems, working in workshops or client premises, including hazardous environments. Apprentices learn to interpret technical drawings, plan tasks, and use specialised tools to assemble, maintain, and repair systems to exact specifications.

They also develop skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and communication, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in their work. Fitters interact with supervisors, engineers, and customers, working independently or as part of a team to meet industry standards with minimal supervision.

Apprenticeship details

The Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship prepares learners for a career in engineering fitting within manufacturing and process sectors.

What it covers:

Knowledge

  • Properties and applications of materials like steel, aluminium, and composites.
  • Design principles, manufacturing processes, and tool safety.
  • Interpreting technical data, diagrams, and quality standards like ISO9001.

Skills

  • Assembling, maintaining, and repairing components with precision tools.
  • Problem-solving using techniques like 5 Whys and process analysis.
  • Planning tasks, performing quality checks, and completing technical documentation.

Behaviours

  • Safety-first mindset with a responsible and resilient approach.
  • Teamwork, clear communication, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Apprentices gain hands-on experience while mastering industry standards in quality, safety, and productivity.

Delivery

Apprentices will attend the Greater Manchester SkillCentre one day per week, and a Skills Development Tutor will visit apprentices on-site every 4 to 6 weeks, working with them to meet employer’s specific needs and expectations.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have minimum GCSE grades A*-C/4-9 in English and maths.

Progression

Apprentices can progress to advanced roles such as Engineering Technician, lead or supervisory positions, or even management within the engineering sector. They may also pursue further qualifications in Engineering, or specialise in areas such as quality assurance, health and safety, or business improvement. The apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for growth in various engineering disciplines and sectors.
