Employers can expect apprentices on the Metal Fabricator Level 3 Apprenticeship to gain comprehensive skills and knowledge tailored to your industry's needs. They will become proficient in metal fabrication, working with materials like rolled steel, aluminium, and titanium across various thicknesses (0.5mm to over 20mm). Apprentices will learn to fabricate, assemble, and repair complex structures and components, including bridges, oil rigs, ships, cranes, automotive parts, and machinery.
They will develop the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, whether in factories or on-site, and use specialised tools to ensure products meet engineering drawings and international standards. The apprenticeship also focuses on collaboration, equipping apprentices to effectively interact with planners, supervisors, designers, welders, and other professionals.

The Metal Fabricator Level 3 Apprenticeship equips apprentices with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to excel in the fabrication, assembly, and repair of metal structures and components.
What it covers:
Knowledge
- Health, safety, quality, and environmental standards.
- Engineering principles, material properties, and diagnostic methods.
- Fabrication processes, joining techniques, and metallurgy.
Skills
- Safely interpret and follow technical documents, plans, and specifications.
- Mark out, cut, form, assemble, and weld materials using appropriate techniques.
- Conduct inspections, ensure quality, and resolve issues.
Behaviours
- Work safely, responsibly, and as part of a team.
- Communicate effectively and maintain high-quality standards.
- Embrace feedback, adapt to change, and continuously improve.
Delivery
Apprentices will attend the Greater Manchester SkillCentre 1 day per week and a Skills Development Tutors will visit apprentices in the workplace every 4 to 6 weeks, working with them to meet employer’s specific needs and expectations.
Entry requirements
Applicants must have a Level 2 Engineering-related qualification and a GCSE grade A*-C/4-) in maths and English.
Progression
Apprentices can progress to roles like Fabricator, Welder, or Technician in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and maritime. With experience, they can move into team leader or supervisor roles, focus on quality control, or specialise in advanced welding or inspection. They can also take further training to move into engineering management or project planning.
