The Welder Level 2 Apprenticeship equips apprentices with the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours for a successful career in welding across various industries, including aerospace, construction, defence, mining, marine, and structural engineering. Welding plays a vital role in the UK economy, contributing to the creation and repair of engineered goods and assets. Welders can be employed by businesses of all sizes, from small companies to large multinationals, working in settings such as fabrication shops, construction sites, factories, and operational facilities.

Apprentices will learn to join metals using manual and mechanised arc welding processes to meet sector standards. They will work with at least two welding processes and material combinations, with one being a manual welding technique, such as TIG, MIG, or MMA welding. Welders will work with a variety of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and alloys, gaining hands-on experience in welding components with different joint layouts and positions.

Welders collaborate with colleagues across functions, including fabricators, riggers, supervisors, and quality control teams, ensuring that their welds meet quality standards and are completed on schedule. They will also develop strong health and safety practices, adhere to environmental regulations, and focus on sustainability by reducing waste and recycling materials. Apprentices will work independently or as part of a team, with minimal supervision, and will be responsible for the quality of their own work while following strict safety and quality standards.
