The Level 3 Craft Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship is designed to help employers develop highly skilled carpenters capable of handling complex and bespoke construction tasks. Apprentices will gain expertise in preparing and installing high-quality building components, including intricate staircases, bespoke structural elements, and complex roof structures.

This programme equips apprentices with the advanced technical skills, knowledge of industry-specific tools, and a strong commitment to safety and quality. It also fosters essential soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, preparing them to excel in diverse settings, from construction sites to commercial and domestic environments.

On successful completion, apprentices will achieve a Craft Carpentry and Joinery Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship details

The Level 3 Craft Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship equips learners with the core skills, knowledge, and behaviours required for a successful career in site carpentry.

What it covers:

  • Knowledge: Developing expertise in wood-based materials, advanced construction methods, health and safety practices, technical specifications, and Building Information Modelling (BIM).
  • Skills: Mastering techniques for shaping and cutting materials, installing bespoke features like doors and staircases, and constructing complex structural elements such as roofs and joists. Plan and execute tasks effectively while selecting appropriate resources.
  • Behaviours: Building teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and a commitment to quality. Maintaining excellent working relationships and take the lead on complex projects when needed.

Apprentices will build expertise in working safely with tools and materials while creating and installing essential building components to industry standards.

Delivery

Apprentices will be required to attend the GM SkillCentre one day per week for their off-the-job training. This will ensure they gain the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to excel in their role, complementing the on-the-job training they’ll receive in the workplace.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject, as well as a Level 2 qualification in maths and English or equivalent.

Progression

On successful completion, apprentices can progress to higher-level apprenticeships, specialise in trades like electrical or plumbing, or pursue further qualifications in construction or property management. Opportunities also include supervisory and management roles in construction or maintenance.
