Delivery

This apprenticeship programme combines both on-the-job and off-the-job training to ensure learners develop the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for a successful career in adult care. Apprentices receive hands-on experience through their employer, complemented by independent study that forms part of their off-the-job learning.

Independent study is captured in a reflective learning log, which records evidence of experiences, reflections and achievements throughout the programme.

Each apprentice is supported by a dedicated Skills Development Tutor who delivers regular learning and assessment sessions. The tutor works closely with the apprentice’s workplace mentor to monitor progress and ensure alignment with professional standards. This structured approach enables apprentices to gain real-world experience, build valuable work-based skills and progress confidently within the adult care sector.

Entry requirements

Apprentices who do not currently hold a Level 1 qualification in English or maths may complete these qualifications before undertaking the End Point Assessment.

While Functional Skills is no longer a mandatory requirement for apprentices aged 19 and over, some adult care programmes may require a minimum level of English and maths due to the nature of the role. Apprentices wishing to opt out of Functional Skills must have approval from their employer.

To work in the adult care sector, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those receiving care.

Progression

If apprentices complete the apprenticeship standard with a pass or a distinction, employers can support their apprentices in progressing to higher levels of study such as the Lead Adult Care Worker Level 3 Apprenticeship.
