The Accounts/Finance Assistant Level 2 Apprenticeship is designed to develop individuals who play a vital role in maintaining an efficient and accurate finance function within an organisation.

An accounts or finance assistant supports the finance team by carrying out essential tasks under supervision, following established procedures. These tasks include financial data entry, reconciling figures, preparing trial balances, managing double-entry bookkeeping, handling accounts payable and receivable, managing sales and purchase ledgers, running calculations to ensure records and payments are accurate, and recording cash transactions. They also use digital finance and accounting systems to input and process data efficiently, ensuring compliance and accuracy.

As an integral member of the team, an accounts or finance assistant contributes to the preparation of financial statements and other essential data, supporting informed decision-making and the smooth operation of the finance function. Their role involves interacting with a wide range of stakeholders, including junior colleagues, supervisors, senior managers, clients, suppliers, and government agencies. By gathering, inputting, and validating financial data, they ensure the organisation has accurate and reliable information to operate effectively.

Apprenticeship details

The Accounts or Finance Assistant Level 2 Apprenticeship provides apprentices with the fundamental skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed for a successful career in finance and accounting.

What it covers:

The apprenticeship covers a range of skills that can be directly applied in the workplace and is supported by elements of an AAT qualification, including:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping
  • Principles of Bookkeeping Controls
  • Principles of Costing
  • The Business Environment

As part of the apprenticeship, apprentices will complete a synoptic exam that assesses their understanding of the Business Environment and Bookkeeping components. Additionally, they will build a portfolio of evidence throughout their apprenticeship and, as part of the End-Point Assessment process, take part in a structured interview and complete an in-tray test.

Delivery

A Skills Development Tutor will be allocated to the apprentice and will deliver learning and assessment sessions with them on a regular basis, liaising with their work-based mentor to monitor progress.

Entry requirements

Ideally, applicants should hold a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C/4 or equivalent.

Additionally, they must be employed in a finance or accountancy role.

Progression

After completing the Accounts or Finance Assistant Level 2 Apprenticeship, individuals have a range of progression opportunities. They can advance to higher-level apprenticeships, such as the Level 3 Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship.

Career options include moving into specialised roles like Accounts Payable/Receivable Clerk, Bookkeeper, Finance Officer, or Payroll Administrator. 

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for building a successful and rewarding career in finance and accounting.
